About Us

Little Cooks Club was established as a proprietorship in April 2006 in Rivonia, Johannesburg, South Africa by Christine Phillips.

Christine, a qualified Chef, studied at Christina Martin School of Food and Wine and is registered with the South African Chefs Association. Christine is a trained chef and has prepared food around the globe from London to Monte Carlo and all the way to Aspen Colorado. She owned a restaurant in Durban for two years before moving to Johannesburg. Once Christine become a mother she realized the interest her own children had in cooking and decided to establish the concept of introducing children to cooking & getting back to basics.

Little Cooks Club is a programme to introduce children between the ages of 18 months and 6 years to the basic principles of cooking and nutrition. The main aim of this is to encourage an awareness of healthy eating by having fun.

Most parents, with busy schedules, don’t have the time to cook with their children at home and are even more discouraged when facing the mess that follows. Little Cooks Club allows parents the opportunity to get back-to-basics with their child, spending an hour a week having fun and being creative in the kitchen, without the responsibility of tidying up.

It is a weekly workshop for parents and toddlers to attend in a child-friendly environment.

Many educational skills are covered in the programme:

  • Language skills: terminology, foods, equipment and following instructions
  • Tactile: the sense of touch is a very important sense to develop for little ones
  • Maths skills: measuring, weighing and counting
  • Colours, shapes, textures and art
  • Science: how the properties of food change
  • Social skills: teamwork which encourages self-esteem
  • Fine Motor Skills when cutting, mixing, mashing, separating, rolling and pouring.

All this happens under the guidance of the teacher and the parent/child minder.

Our Charity - Ray of Hope

This year we will be supporting the Ray of Hope Foundation for Abused and abandoned children. We will be helping out a crèche in Olievenhoutbos Settlement, called Balaseng Day Care Centre. It’s basically run by a local lady, with 2 assistance and the crèche building is only a single room.  They have over 60 children who they look after and feed every day.

We would like to donate groceries such as toiletries, paper, crayons, books, play dough, puzzles, toys, clothes and any non-perishable items like Mielie Meal etc. for this group which we would like to give them on a continual basis throughout the year.

They are also looking for volunteers’ – so please contact the Ray of hope directly for that.

This can be dropped off at your Local Little Cooks Club and we will make sure it gets there.  Please bear them in mind when doing your weekly/monthly shopping.
